Margaret Muir Reid was born on August 30, 1834 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. She is John Muir’s older sister.
The first time Margaret sees the United States is when the Warren leaves Glasgow, Scotland and arrives in the New York harbor on April 10, 1849. Margaret’s father (Daniel Muir) purchases a half section of land near the Fox River in Buffalo, Wisconsin, about 12 miles from Portage. They remain there for eight years.
It would be in the same year (1849) when her future husband arrives in the United States. John Reid was born in February of 1835 in Scotland. In 1860, John marries Margaret in Wisconsin.
In the 1880s, John and Margaret are living in Portage, Wisconsin along with their five children: Anna, Jessey, Harry, Maggie and John. John is a Produce and Stock Dealer.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, we find John and Margaret living in Alhambra Valley. California. He is now a vineyardist and foreman on the Muir farm. His sister-in-law, Sarah M. Galloway, has come to live with them.
On June 11, 1910, Margaret passes away at 76 years of age. After a long illness, John Reid passes on October 20, 1926 in his Martinez home. He was 91 years old and is buried in the Alhambra Cemetery.
Their son, John Muir Reid (County Assessor), his wife Bertha (Block) Reid, and grandson John Muir Reid, Jr. are buried in Alhambra Cemetery as well. John Jr. died in an airplane crash 10 months after his father’s passing. Bertha passed two months after her son, John Jr.
